During the conversation, the parties discussed ongoing efforts in Uzbekistan to prevent violence against women and to provide legal and psychological assistance to survivors. Ambassador Girts Jaunzems noted with satisfaction that relations between Uzbekistan and Latvia are developing and strengthening in many areas.
It was also recognized that, within a short period, significant changes have been implemented in Uzbekistan to protect human rights—particularly to support women—and that concrete state measures are being taken.
The meeting further noted that, under the Ombudsman’s “Equality and Respect” platform, women survivors of violence are receiving psychological, legal, and targeted social assistance at rehabilitation centers. For reference: at the end of October this year, a new shelter was launched in Fergana under the NGO “Mehrjon” in cooperation with the Ombudsman and UNDP’s Uzbekistan office, providing temporary accommodation as well as psychological, social, and legal support.
Representatives of “NGO ENJOY” also proposed opportunities for joint projects and exchanges of experience in this area. Issues of strengthening future cooperation between Latvia’s human rights institutions and the Ombudsman were discussed as well.
