Ombudsman Holds a Series of Bilateral Meetings During Official Visit to Geneva
On 31 March and 1 April 2026, the Commissioner of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman), Feruza Eshmatova, held a series of bilateral meetings during her official visit to Geneva.

In particular, meetings were held with Agi Veres, Director of the Geneva Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Secretary of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), Alison Kilpatrick, Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, Tuy Doan-Smith, Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF), as well as Matthias Klettermaer, Human Rights Officer at the National Institutions and Regional Mechanisms Section of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

During the meetings, the parties discussed issues related to expanding international cooperation in the field of human rights, strengthening institutional dialogue, enhancing the role of national human rights institutions at the international level, as well as developing regional and practical cooperation.

During the discussions, the Ombudsman emphasized that ensuring human rights has become one of the priority directions of state policy in Uzbekistan. It was noted that, as a result of ongoing reforms, the mechanisms for the protection of human rights and freedoms have been significantly improved, and the effectiveness and impact of the Ombudsman institution have increased.

In particular, it was highlighted that following the assignment of “B status” by GANHRI in 2020, step-by-step measures have been implemented, taking into account the recommendations provided, to align the institution’s activities with the Paris Principles. As a result, the legal framework has been strengthened, the scope of response measures has been expanded, the role of regional representatives has been reinforced, and digital solutions have been introduced, creating more accessible and transparent mechanisms for applicants.

The participants also shared their views and recommendations, emphasizing the importance of continuing institutional development and further strengthening international cooperation.

The meetings were held in a constructive and open atmosphere.
